Nisha is a kind and empathetic occupational therapist. She pushes to go the extra mile for all her clients, but is also a firm believer in
empowering the client to do as much as they can for themselves. She
advocates for all clients to be activities healthy (to a have a balanced life style, that provides comfort and satisfaction) which creates a sense of independence and self worth.
Her occupational therapy degree was obtained at the
University of the Witwatersrand in 2011. She went on to complete her community service at
Natalspruit Hospital in 2012. Here, she developed her interest in neurological rehabilitation and paediatrics (developmental delay and learning difficulties).
In 2013 Nisha started working at Futura School in Johannesburg south. She was able to exercise her knowledge to develop team ethic, and a holistic approach to therapy, by encompassing: teachers, teacher assistants and the caregivers of the learners into the therapy programme. This allowed for carry over to be more effective and all parties to gain a better understanding of the child so that goals could be more clear and realistic. She did this by developing and initiating parent support groups, which empowered parents/caregivers to confidently fulfill their role as a parent to the so called "difficult child".
In the first year at Futura, Nisha felt like she was limiting herself to one field too early in her career, so she decided to open a private practice to extend her scope and knowledge base. She intended to see more adult clients but the need for paediatric services was greater than expected. Thus, she continued in paediatrics. From time to time, she would see an adult client. This usually took place as home visits. This is when she truly started to see and understand the value of working with clients in their own environments and the impact it had on their progress.
To keep up to date with current occupational therapy knowledge across the scope, Nisha also tutored third year WITS occupational therapy students.
In July 2016, Nisha got hitched and relocated to the Eastern cape. Here she volunteered until December, when she finally got a job at a rural district hospital, Zithulele Hospital. She was exposed to an excellent multidisciplinary team approach to health care, at Zithulele. She worked closely with all team members to provide realistic and goal directed therapy.
Nisha was able to rekindle her love for neurology and found new interest in psychiatry. She went on to complete the internationally recognized basic bobath NDT course in 2017, a support group leader and counselling training hosted by the South Africa depression and Anxiety Group in 2017 and a course in the Activity Participation Outcome measure by Dr Castjilien (OT) in 2018 to further develop her interest. Nisha also got involved with staff wellness at Zithulele Hospital, providing peer support, counselling and facilitating activities health in colleagues suffering from burnout, trauma and depression.
In 2017, Nisha was afforded the opportunity to work with Jabulani rural health foundation on a project to assist the process of inclusion in mainstream schools in the Eastern Cape. She began to initiate more parent support groups in the communities surrounding the hospital and attended a course on inclusive education presented by DIKETO INCLUSIVE EDUCATION in 2017. In 2018, Nisha focused on developing a more sustainable group for children with learning disabilities, aiming to improve gross motor, fine motor, visual perception and activity participation while building parent/child relationships.
In 2019 February, Nisha relocated back to Johannesburg. After prioritizing her little one for the first few months, Nisha decided to reopen her practice so that she can continue what she loves to do best, the way she likes to do it - Taking OT "Beyond the basic".
Nisha continues to strive to provide the best services and has used the opportunity (of time) during lockdown to develop her skill set even further. Nisha completed her basic, intermediate and advanced medico-legal course in June 2020 through Medcare-holdings and then went onto completing a certificate in Basic financial management in December 2020 through the University of Cape Town.
In 2021 Nisha began to explore maternal mental health and wellness due to her own experiences as a new mother, lack of work opportunity during lockdown, and feeling overloaded and overwhelmed during lockdown. She attended a workshop on the Role of OT in breastfeeding, COVID-19: Psychological first aid in Africa, and the Practitioners Sensory Intelligence® training course. These courses assisted Nisha to improve herself personally and professionally, therefore allowing her to provide a better and more efficient service with the addition of services and workshops to assist all clients, not just those who have a diagnosis in adjusting and maintaining their mental health and wellness using a sensory regulatory approach.
In May 2021, Nisha became a Licensee of Sensory Intelligence® consulting and continues this journey as a Sensory Intelligence® practitioner providing support to learners, parents and teachers using the Sensory Matrix™.
As of January 2022, Nisha started working in a government post as an OT at Randeor School, serving learners with learning difficulties and continues to operate her private practice part time by gaining her RWOPs certificate from the GDE.
